A Trane of Music

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 | Uncategorized with No Comments »

 Coltrane
Not much has been written about John Coltrane in the recent past, but that does not mean the man’s music is not taken sincerely anymore. Actually, so much has already been written about Coltrane that there isn’t much left for writers like me to talk about. Hmmm…well, yes there are a few Trane tunes I feel should have got more recognition than they did. His rendition of Billy Strayhorn’s classic “Lush Life” is truly the best version ever. Even “Central Park West” is a wonderful tune in its original form though Joe Lovano later topped it. And of course, who can ignore the title cut called “Traneing in” from the 1957 session Coltrane had with pianist Red Garland.
For the uninitiated, John Coltrane and Red Garland were a part of Miles Davis’ quintet in the mid-fifties. But side by side Trane was out of it and spent time woodshedding under Thelonius Monk. Red too headed his own little trio on the side, comprising Paul Chambers and Art Taylor who later joined Davis.
One can actually point at a heap of tracks from John Coltrane’s later career that made him reach great heights. Fans found a new grooviness in them, which was missing, in his early numbers.

Can music-shows broadcast development goals?

Sunday, August 5th, 2007 | Television with No Comments »

In the first initiative of its kind, several celebrities will come together for a music- based reality TV show that will promote the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals in India.

The show titled “Ustaad” will be produced by the UN along with the Indian arm of Endemol, the entertainment company behind the hit show “Big Brother”.

The star-studded show will take forward some of the UN’s key socio-economic issues that require immediate attention through an interactive and entertaining medium.

“The programme, which will be launched in November, brings together two powerful mediums — television and music — to provide a platform to reach out to audiences across the country on issues like poverty, health, education and environment,” Rajesh Kamat, managing director of Endemol India, told PTI.

The company has produced TV blockbusters like “Big Boss”, “Fear Factor India”, “Deal Ya No Deal”, “Heart Beat” and the “Great Indian Laughter Challenge”.

The company decided to rope in eminent personalities, artists, musicians and singers for promoting the eight MGDs in the country. It, however, refused to disclose their names.

“We are pleased to be partnering in producing an innovative music show that will inspire millions of Indians across generations to take up the cause of the MDGs as their own,” UN Resident Coordinator Maxine Olson said.
