Who says only dangerously low cut Valentino dress or a backless gown from Gucci can rule the Red Carpet? Conservative dressing can also spell magic in the fashion circles of the world. British designer Bruce Oldfield has now designed the world’s first red carpet Abaya. For those unfamiliar with the term, Abaya is a traditional women’s garment worn in the Islamic World. In U.A.E, it is the national dress for Arabian ladies. This overgarment covers the whole body except the face, feet, and hands. The dress is known for its fall and flow. Materials like crape, georgette, and chiffon are used with heavy or light embroidery depending upon the region.

Oldfield has however designed this particular piece in memory of his muse, late Princess Diana known for her slender and delicate beauty. Let’s see what makes this Abaya a hot property.

·    Oldfield’s Abaya is priced at $350,000 (£175, 0000)!!!

·    It has 359.7 grams of white gold and 4,668 individual diamonds. Wowww….

·    The diamonds weighing 85.13 carats in totality were supplied by Harriet Crosley of Crosley Diamonds.

·    The dress will be sold during ‘The Saudi Gulf Luxury Trade Fair’ at InterContinental London Park Lane (2-3August, 2008).

While I m awestruck to see the beauty of this Abaya, its rich embroidery, neat cut, smooth texture and brilliant display I’m also jealous (a bit) of its prospective buyer! know this one is way beyond my reach but what makes me happy is the fact that a portion of the sales will be channeled to the Islamic Relief charity. Although, am quite curious to know what will be the size of the portion donated in comparison to the Abaya’s astronomical cost? Nevertheless, absolute beauty and a good cause make haute couture such a hit among the ladies ;)
